WinPE environment is not renaming hostnames

    1. Created the WinPE Imaging Environment
    2. Boot to ISO and upload image
    3. Boot to ISO on second laptop and deploy image

    Logs indicate it's being renamed:

    ** Changing Computer Name **

    ** Sysprep Answer File Found. Updating Computer Name **

    ** Closing Active Task **

    Checked "C:\Windows\Panther\unattend.xml" to find the computer name is not listed at all.

    <?xml version='1.0' encoding='utf-8'?>
    <unattend xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:unattend">
        <settings pass="specialize" wasPassProcessed="true">
            <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="amd64" publicKeyToken="0000000000000000" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
                <CopyProfile>true</CopyProfile>
            </component>
        </settings>
    </unattend>

    Is there a way to get more detailed logs to find why the xml file isn't being updated?

  • The computer name tag must exist in the answer file. Doesn't matter what's inside it. Just needs to exist

  • @clonedeploy_admin I'm well aware.

    It's not being written to by clonedeploy like when we boot to the syslinix environment.

    This is a base load of Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 1809. We've not had to touch or manually modify the file prior to uploading an image.

    Are you saying that due to the xml value not existing on the base image, CD didn't have anything to change? Does it only modify it if it exists?

  • Yes

  • @clonedeploy_admin A bit confused here. The XML does not exist when we install a base of Windows. Tested on LTSB 1607 & LTSC 1809. This is not a file we've been creating and modifying before. Is this file not being generated by CloneDeploy?

  • @clonedeploy_admin Well, I found the the issue!!

    Thank you for your project and these forums being active again. I was able to find this post:

    https://forum.clonedeploy.org/topic/705/hostname-not-set-during-image/7

    One of our other techs created a custom WIM Windows installation. When doing so, it generated the XML file. IF the file exists you'll experience issues like mine and those described in this post.

    So, we deleted the file, uploaded the image, and it is successfully renamed!
